Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the effect of bariatric surgery on cardiovascular risk applying the Framingham score. In patients of the Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Service of the Trinidad Teaching Medical Center undergoing bariatric surgery in 2019 and 2020. Methods: It is a descriptive, observational and retrospective study, where the population is made up of patients undergoing gastric bypass and gastrectomy vertical from 2019 to 2020 in the Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Service of the Trinidad Teaching Medical Center. For statistical analysis, Pearson's chi-square test for independence, Mann-Whitney's U test, and the Kruskal-Wallis test were used. Results: A progressive decrease in cardiovascular risk is observed in the distribution of patients at the time, preoperatively, one year and two years postoperatively according to the level of risk under the Framingham score (p = 0.006). Conclusion: The results observed demonstrate the favorable effects of bariatric surgery on comorbidities associated with morbid obesity; on the components of the metabolic syndrome and on the improvement in cardiovascular risk factors included in the Framingham equation.
