Abstract

Objective: Establishing the incidence of internal hernias in patients undergoing gastric bypass type Roux Y, in the surgical and clinical therapeutic services "B" and "D" of the University Hospital of Caracas. Methods: The present work is a cross-sectional, retrospective, descriptive cohort study. The population is all patients operated by gastric bypass, besides reconstruction in Roux "Y" (BGLYR) in the services of clinical and therapeutic professorship "B" and "D" of the University Hospital of Caracas (HUC), between January 2013 and December 2018. An intentional non-probabilistic sampling was used to obtain the sample according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, and is represented by the patients who underwent BGLYR and who subsequently presented a diagnosis of symptomatic internal hernias. Results: The incidence of internal hernias in the studied period was 8.6%, being Petersen's space the most frequently herniated by 51.7%. The average percentage of excess weight loss (PEP) was 81.7%. Internal hernias on average appeared at 33.8 months; internal hernias were more common when the rise in the food loop occurred, retro-colic was performed.
